Birkirkara FC will be presenting their new squad for season 2007/2008 next Friday during an activity named ‘Lejla Karkariza’ (Birkirkara night) in the town’s Main Street.
The club this season made it clear that they wanted to part company with some of their established players. Among those who left are midfielder William Camenzuli (to Marsaxlokk), and striker Etienne Barbara and flank player Roderick Briffa (to Sliema W.). Clint Micallef and Mark Anthony Bonnici have also been told they are not in the club’s plans.
Several new faces have been brought in to replace them. The first important signing was that of Paul Fenech, formerly of Msida St Joseph, who was their number one target. He is considered as one of the brightests prospects in Maltese football at present.
Other players followed. These were Lee Lombardi, Emil Yantchev, from Bulgaria, Ron Hardvig, from Denmark, Kenneth Spiteri, Omar Borg and Sean Bajada besides confirming youngsters Alan Tabone, Bernard and Thomas Paris and Martin Anastasi.
At present two national team players of the Central African Republic, a Brazilian forward as well as a Bulgarian striker are on trial with the Stripes although a decision over who will partner Michael Galea and Jean Paul Mifsud Triganza up front will have to be taken these days – the transfer deadline is 31 August. At present, African player Boris Sandjo seems to be the favourite to get the job after scoring in all the three matches in last week’s Carlsberg tournament which the Stripes won.
Birkirkara will be playing their first League match on Sunday 26 August with the opposition being provided by Hibernians, winners of the Euro Cup and the Super Cup.
