Malta Independent Sunday, 7 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Two men were given a seven-month jail term suspended for four years yesterday after they admitted causing trouble at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali during the Sliema vs Valletta football match on Thursday.

Jonathan Spiteri, 26, from St Julian’s and Joseph Omar Cumbo, 37, from Santa Lucija, pleaded guilty to inciting other people to break the law and commit an offence, using foul language and breaching the peace.

While Cumbo also pleaded guilty to slightly injuring a police superintendent, both men further admitted they attempted to attack the police, verbally threatened them, insulted them and disobeyed their orders.

Besides the suspended sentence, they were fined Lm500 / EUR1,164 each and banned from going to any football ground for two years.
