Malta Independent Tuesday, 9 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

A walkathon will be held from Gzira Seafront (Manoel Island) to St Julian’s (Love Monument) this Friday at 8.30pm. This walkathon is organised by MT StyleClinic in aid of Ghabex, the emergency shelter managed by Agenzija Appogg providing an immediate safe environment to women victims of domestic violence and their children, who require immediate protection. Meeting time is at 8pm in front of Manoel Island.

A donation of Lm10/EUR23.29 is being asked from each participant. However, everyone is welcome to give as much as they can afford. All money collected will contribute towards the furnishings of Ghabex. First aiders will be present during the walk. The fee is inclusive of water and a T-shirt to be worn during the walk.

Ghabex is committed to providing a safe environment to female victims of domestic violence and their children, and to providing professional social work to women and their children suffering violence in intimate and family relationships. The service offers a setting conducive to self healing to women and their children who suffer emotional, physical and sexual violence.

The women’s stay at the shelter is aimed at a maximum period of three months, after which service users will move on to a second stage shelter, or to any alternative accommodation that would have been identified during their stay at Ghabex. During these three months, staff at Ghabex support the women in their daily needs, and will also work with them to draw up an action plan for their future.

Everyone is invited to attend for this walkathon. The walkathon is supported by the Vodafone Malta Foundation.
