SDM expressed great satisfaction that the government had once again given due importance to education in the Budget measures for 2008. As a student organisation, SDM felt that this budget would be another key step towards further strengthening the education system in Malta and help Malta attain the highest levels in education.

“SDM is satisfied that the financial allocation for the University and the Junior College will increase for the second year round. It is also with great satisfaction that we note a specific investment for improving facilities at the University of Malta and the Junior College. SDM believes that with the measures announced, education shall improve on all levels,” it said.

It was also positive that the government had continued to give due importance to the ICT sector and had dedicated an adequate investment for the sector. In a clear sign that this was a Budget aimed at improving education in Malta, the measures announced would result in better primary schools; secondary schools and MCAST.

SDM said the capital expenditure on education was a positive sign which should encourage students at all levels.

Other positive measures announced were the setting up of several educational programmes which should make the educational experience in Malta more holistic and effective. SDM also considered as highly positive the decision to grant assistance to Maltese students attending a foreign university at a first degree level.
