In developing the Golden Sands Resort & Spa, great consideration was given to make the Resort as environmentally friendly as possible. In this respect, the latest technology was used to achieve results which would contribute to sustainable tourism.

A major aspect of this scheme was the installation of a state of the art sewage treatment plant.

The plant commissioned through the local company, Waste Resources and Technology, involved a very considerable amount of capital investment, but it is yielding excellent results and pay back is over a relatively short period of time. The sewage treatment plan, which has now been operating for over two years eliminates the use of the government sewage infrastructure as all black and grey water is processed through a number of filters and converted into clear water which is used for irrigation of the vast landscaped areas of the Resort.

The water being produced by the treatment plant is much more than is required for the use of the Resort itself. Instead of disposing of this extra water, the Golden Sands has made the necessary adjustment to the system so any excess water is stored in a special reservoir, outside the Resort, which belongs to the Government. This water is used by the Rural Affairs and the Environment Ministry for irrigation of the trees that are being planted in Mellieha.

Apart from the sewage treatment plant, the Resort is also equipped with two RO plants which makes the hotel self sufficient for its water supplies.

Winston V Zahra, group managing director, said that he was very pleased that through the installation of the sewage treatment plant, they are able to donate the excess water to Government for irrigation purposes.
