Some 500 children from the Agenda Kids Club will be planting their own tree at the Foresta 2000 site, next to the Red Tower in Mellieha, during the tree planting weekend organised by the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment this weekend.
In all, the Agenda Kids Club will be contributing over 3,000 trees for a children-friendly area incorporated as part of the afforestation project currently underway at the site. Last May, the site was targeted by vandals, sparking off a nationwide campaign to raise money for the restoration of the area and to increase the number of trees planted at the Foresta 2000, in collaboration with Din
l-Art Helwa and BirdLife Malta.
Private organisations and the public will be participating with their contribution towards the restoration project. Agenda Kids Club will be planting personalised trees in the afternoon of Sunday during a programme jam-packed with fun activities aimed to foster love of the environment among children.
“The aim of the Agenda Kids Club is to encourage education through reading which, in turn, introduces children to the world that surrounds us, including issues of concern like the environment,” said Rachelle Tabone, Marketing Manager for Agenda Bookshop. “Being educated also means being aware of the threats faced by the environment and assuming the responsibility to do our part to improve and look after the environment.”
The Agenda Kids Club was established just under one year ago with the aim of promoting literacy and educating children on issues like the environment. In collaboration with the 34U Campaign of the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment, the Club is committed to plant a tree for every member registered by the end of the year.
Every young member who joins the Agenda Kids Club receives a certificate as proof that a tree is being planted in their name plus a goodie bag and membership benefits. The tree planting activity is in line with the Club’s philosophy to show that just one little tree from a child can make a difference to make Malta greener for the benefit of future generations. Membership of the Agenda Kids Club is free of charge.
