Masquerade Theatre Company opened its 2007-2008 season the John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize multi-award winning play, DOUBT – a parable, last Friday at St James Cavalier Valletta.
Doubt is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision when she suspects a popular priest of inappropriate behavior with a student.
Armed with nothing more than a resolute belief in her suspicion, the nun instigates a relentless campaign to remove the priest, with the help of a subordinate nun and the student’s tormented mother.
Nothing is certain however. Should she voice her concerns, even if she’s not entirely certain of the truth? “What do you do when you’re not sure?” Father Flynn asks the audience in the opening line of this play, setting the stage for a story of suspicion and moral certainty.
Doubt won numerous awards including the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize.
It has now premiered in Malta thanks to Masquerade Theatre Company under the direction of Anthony Bezzina and a stellar cast that includes Monica Attard, Faye Paris, Malcolm Galea and guest actress Evelyn Duah from the Royal Shakespeare Company in the UK. The set was designed by Harry Borg and costumes are by Ernest Camilleri.
Doubt will be performed at St. James Cavalier for an extra weekend between 26 and 28 October. Cert.: 16 years. Booking is open at St. James Cavalier on tel. 2122-3200, email: boxoffice@ sjcav.org.
