A delegation of more than 50 people recently visited Shanghai for Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007. The games were held between 2 and 12 October. Malta fielded 19 athletes taking part in athletics, swimming, bowling and gymnastics. The athletes were accompanied by a group of parents, family members and friends of 24 persons and by another group of volunteers, officials and coaches of around 10 persons led by Anna Calleja the Special Olympics Malta National Director.

During his visit to the games the Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China Karl Xuereb stated, “This is a very special event, the importance of which cannot be understated. The Special Olympics gives all those who are participating the chance to be a winner. Developing the skills required to participate in such events requires a strong commitment and consistent training.

“I believe that this activity is a therapy for people with intellectual disabilities. They benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually from their efforts. This in turn facilitates their inclusive participation in society. It was a privilege to be able to witness these games, to spend time with the athletes, parents and friends, to share in their joy and emotion and to understand the challenges they face collectively.

I would also like to congratulate all those volunteers and officials for their hard work that has not only made the dream of participation a reality but has also yielded such remarkable success. Each of our athletes took at least one medal home!”
