Eighty-one new recruits have now joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Malta after their passing out parade which was held yesterday morning at Luqa Barracks.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi attended the parade which follows some 16 weeks of intensive training, led by directing staff of instructors from 1 Regiment’s C (Special Duties) Company.

The new young soldiers will now be posted in the various units and sub-units of the AFM. In his congratulatory address to the recruits, Dr Gonzi expressed the nation’s appreciation for varied valid work performed by the service personnel, remarking that its hallmarks remain those of discipline and loyalty to the nation. Such values are now embraced by these young soldiers which they must honour throughout their career.

The Prime Minister went on to mention the overseas successes of AFM personnel while on training with larger nations’ armed forces, adding that such accomplishments were not only a personal honour for the individuals themselves, but also for the whole country as well. Despite our size and limitations, AFM personnel have shown they are professional and qualified, capable in turning every challenge into a great accomplishment.

The AFM, he added, provides a crucial service to the nation, particularly in the fight against illegal migration and organised crime. The soldiers’ dedication to duty is no better exemplified by their present great commitment in providing security for the some EUR 18 million that was imported to Malta to be circulated when the country switches currency.

Dr Gonzi concluded by thanking AFM Commander, Brigadier Carmel Vassallo and his officers for their dedication to duty, professionalism, commitment, seriousness and loyalty to the nation. He also thanks the recruits’ course instructors for having instilled pride and discipline in the Force’s new members. The Prime Minister presented a memento to the basic military training course’s best recruits, Gunners Domenic Gatt and Pierre Cassar.

Brigadier Carmel Vassallo explained that from the 300 or so original applicants for this intake, these 81 new soldiers have succeeded in making it till the course’s end. He encouraged them to seek more knowledge and learning, and to appreciate the virtues of discipline as this builds on their characters.

He also added that in these recent days, the AFM’s call for the enlistment of recruits has seen some 380 applicants. It is expected that in 2008, several more calls for enlistment are issued.

Also present for the parade was the OPM’s Parliamentary Secretary Anthony Abela along with several of relatives and friends of the new AFM soldiers.
