Attorney General And ministry call foul on media reporting

Malta Independent Friday, 9 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The IT and Investment Ministry and the Attorney General yesterday filed two writs in court over the court reports relating to a whistle blowing case at Mater Dei Hospital published on the front page of yesterday’s edition of l-orizzont and on the electronic newspaper Maltastar.com.

The court report was of the corruption case initiated by the police against Noel Xuereb and Paul Mercieca.

The complainants claimed that the reports of the matter in the two said mediums were veiled as news reports, yet were only intended to expose the authorities to public ridicule.

The writs also say that the reports tried to give the impression that a member of the IT and Investment Ministry’s secretariat, who is a witness in the said case, was either tolerant or involved in corruption. The complainants said that the articles were abusive and aimed at tarnishing the judicial process and therefore requested the court to issue a decree on the issue.
