Remembrance Sunday

Malta Independent Monday, 12 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The day started with Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta, said by Archbishop Mgr Paul Cremona. President Eddie Fenech Adami inspected a guard of honour of the Armed Forces of Malta before the Mass.

This was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Floriana, where a contingent of ex-servicemen from the Royal British Legion was present.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna marked the day with a signal-gun firing from the Saluting Battery which was repeated two minutes later to signify the two-minute period of silence, traditionally observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year throughout the Commonwealth.

A commentary of the event in English and the recording of poems from World War I were also played to keep with the traditions of the occasion.

In 1918 the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month acquired particular meaning in the years following the war as conflict ended on the Western front, and the moment became associated with the remembrance of soldiers who lost their life in battle in World War I.

After World War II, this particular day was celebrated in honour of those who lost their life in the two world wars and its title changed from Armistice to Remembrance Day.
