Malta Independent Monday, 26 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The 2007 Autumn fund raising concert organised by Din l-Art Helwa is a choral recital by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate on Friday, 30 November. This will take place in the splendid aristocratic setting of the Palazzo Parisio at Naxxar. The Schola Cantorum Jubilate was founded in the year 2000 and since its inception has firmly established itself as one of the leading choirs of the Maltese islands. Under the direction of Ms Marouska Attard the Gozitan youth choir specialises in sacred polyphony and its repertoire spans from the Renaissance through the Baroque and to the contemporary eras.

The choir has given several high profile and outstanding concerts both locally and abroad.

They organise the much acclaimed “Carols by Candlelight” concert in Gozo every year and were the only Maltese choir to participate in the Sacred International Festival organised by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation. They also performed the opera “Dido and Aeneas” as part of the Band of Valletta Opera Festival. In November 2003 the choir represented Malta in the Rencontres Musicales Mediterranée Festival in Bastia, Corsica and they participated with major foreign academies like that of St Cecilia in Rome. Last September the choir had the honour of singing in the prestigious Basilica of St Peter’s in the Vatican, Santa Maria Maggiore and St Francis in Assisi.

The programme at Palazzo Parisio will consist of sacred and profane aspects of music featuring choral and solo pieces by Victoria, Bach, Mozart, Elgar, Chappell, Sullivan, Perosi and by the promising young composer Paul Portelli. The participation of the choir has been made possible by the sponsorship of Go Mobile.

Tickets are Lm14 per person including drinks after the concert and a lavish buffet reception organised by Palazzo Events. The concert will begin at 7.30 pm and proceeds are in aid of Din l-Art Helwa’s restoration projects. For booking information please phone 2122-0358, or call at the offices of Din l-Art Helwa at 133 Melita Street, Valletta.
