Seminars, drama, and cross curricular works are among initiatives taken by the Curriculum Department to prepare students for the changeover to the euro on 1 January. In their turn the children, it is hoped, will be passing on what they learn to their families.
The Abacus maths books in state primary schools have included sums to familiarise the students with using the new currency. And since September, after the summer holidays, lessons have referred to the euro – the lira Maltija is out.
Teachers have also been trained, with staff development courses after school hours, and exhibitions with the euro as the theme. The plays Auld Lang Syne and Money, Money, Money were also put up. The cross curricular work took care to introduce the euro not only into mathematics but in all subjects, whether science, language or geography.
The history department also presented information about the euro and formulated an interactive quiz for secondary school students and brought down links with electronic sites where information on the euro can be had. The site may be accessed at http://schoolnet.gov.mt/history.
