A man was yesterday cleared of insurance fraud with the court deeming that not enough evidence had been brought against him to support a conviction.
The court cleared Martin Cassano, 54, of having tried to defraud Rausi Insurance out of more than Lm1,000 on 11 November 2002. He was also cleared of handling stolen goods and of attempted insurance fraud. The court said that two of the charges were not proven at all while one still shed an element of doubt on the case. Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona ruled that all doubts in a case should always go in favour of the accused and therefore cleared him of any involvement.
Police inspector Chris Pullicino prosecuted while Dr Roberto Montalto appeared for the accused.
