Seminar On Ta’ Bistra catacombs

Malta Independent Friday, 30 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Mosta local council and Heritage Malta are involved in an ambitious project that seeks to address the heritage management and preservation of the archaeological site of Ta’ Bistra Catacombs in Mosta.

EU Project Funding Interreg IIIA, has enabled Maltese and Sicilian partners to work together on the project Cultexchange, that seeks to invest 350,000 euros for the benefit of Ta’ Bistra and the Catacombe delle Trabacche.

Both project teams are working towards providing accessibility to these two sites, and the Ragusian partners are investing heavily in acquiring the necessary land rights so as to create access paths to this site in the Ragusian countryside. The Maltese partners are working to rehabilitate the farmhouse found above the site, and to turn it into a visitor’s centre. This development is about to start and should reach conclusion in the first half of 2008, hoping to see visitors later in the year. A seminar is being held at Mosta council today to discuss the project and its deliverables, conservation issues plaguing the site, archaeological papers relating to both paleochristian archaeological sites found in Ragusa and Malta, as well as the way forward to provide accessibility to the sites.
