Another Exhibition by Philip Agius

Malta Independent Saturday, 1 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Le Méridien St Julians is hosting the latest painting exhibition by Philip Agius. These pieces can be viewed at the lobby area in level 3.

Philip Agius was born in 1964 and hails from Zebbug, Malta. He studied painting technique under Alfred Chircop and Anthony Calleja and was active as part of the Nghinu bl-Arti Art Club in the early 1980s. His main exhibitions to date were held at the British Legion, Valletta (1994), at the Post Office at Rabat (Gozo) (1996), at the Mosta Local Council (1997) and at the Dominican convent in Rabat (Malta)(1999). Agius has also taken part in a TV series on art teaching. He has been a teacher of art at St. Michael School for the last twelve years and also provides private tuition in the subject.

The mood in his paintings is generally tranquil and reflective and the expression positive, even verging on the celebrational: light over darkness, bright colours over heavy shades, organic over abstract.

His other artistic interests are wide-ranging and include sculpture, by both manual or mechanical moulding and carving, using mediums like ceramics, clay and wood. He is also a keen photographer and a great nature lover. The latter value can be seen in this particular exhibition whereby as a theme he chose that of animals, with an emphasis on farm animals. In a previous exhibition earlier this autumn, also held at Le Méridien St Julian’s he chose to portray Africa – showing mostly anthropogenic Africa, as well as flowers.

The pieces at Le Méridien St Julians are also up for purchase. The exhibition will be open until Tuesday 4 December.
