MedCore Exhibition on coastal management launched

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The exhibition “Domestic Mediterranean: Science as a link between cultures” is the University of Malta’s output since its involvement in a series of EU-funded research projects. The exhibition showcases several diverse aspects of the Mediterranean region, focusing specifically on linkages between natural and social systems.

Aspects of studies conducted in the ambit of the MedCore (Mediterranean Coastal River Ecosystems) research project were also presented. The aims of the project were to utilise scientific research to contribute towards sustainable management of coastal resources.

The University of Malta’s International Environment Institute forms part of the pan-Mediterranean research consortium involved in the MedCore project, together with universities, research institutions and environmental management agencies from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco. Preceding projects concern Mediterranean ecosystems with the same consortium, while current participation involves a third (three-year) project focusing on water use and coastal management in the Mediterranean Basin.

Within the ambit of MedCore, the team was responsible for research concerning coastal systems, linkages between geomorphological dynamics and vegetational assemblages, and management of coastal assets, including a management audit of the Maremma national park.

The exhibition will be open to the public on 6, 7, 10 – 12 December between 9.30am and 4pm, at the Chemistry Building, 3rd Floor, University of Malta, Msida.
