Femme Fatale Follows Vertigo

Malta Independent Sunday, 23 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Another international composer with a Eurovision Song Contest pedigree has reached the finals stage in Belgium’s Eurosong 2008 national selection.

The song Décadence was created especially for Betty, the former Big Brother reality television show contestant who will be performing under the stage name of Femme Fatale. Former four-time Malta Song For Europe winning composer, Gerard James Borg with Mik Tanczos, wrote the song.

esctoday.com reported that the song is different from the typical Eurovision songs. It could be described as “sensual and elegant, catchy yet unique”.

The concept of the song and the lyrics are by Gerard James Borg, who wrote the lyrics to Malta’s 2007 Eurovision Song Contest entry, Vertigo, performed by Olivia Lewis. He has written four Maltese entries including the 2002 runner-up, Seventh Wonder, for Ira Losco.

He has also collaborated with Thomas G:son on records for Queentastic in Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix, and together they had a song in the Romanian semi-finals this year, which was disqualified when the performers failed to arrive for rehearsals, choosing instead to remain in New York where they were hoping to land modelling contracts.

The song’s composer is Mik Tanczos, a young and talented songwriter and producer. He has written several commercial acts and two of his albums were nominated for best alternative music awards. He has also collaborated on some projects with UK producer Gareth Jones who has produced Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp.

Betty is no stranger to the Eurosong stage, as she had taken part in 2004 under the name of Biba Binoche. Her entry, Je Chante Pour Toi, did not reach the final, but this year she is giving it another try.

Hinting about her 2008 entry, she says “Belgium has already entered a few fantastic songs over the years, but at the same time we often come a couple of years too late. I think now is the time to take a risk and to something that no other country is even thinking of. If the viewer doesn’t pick me, then hopefully it will be another original act and not a cheap copy of one of the previous winners.”
