Valletta Beat Juventus on penalties

Malta Independent Thursday, 10 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Valletta stunned all those present at Ta’ Qali yesterday after they managed to beat Juventus to win the Betfair Cup on penalties.

Valletta gave a good performance against Italian giants Juventus in this prestigious friendly. The match ended with a 4-3 victory for Valletta after a penalty shoot-out. The match ended 1-1 in normal time.

Thousands of Maltese Juventus fans had the time of their life this week, with their soccer idols in Malta for a training camp.

The visit of the Italian club, which has won 27 league titles and was crowned European champions twice, culminated yesterday when the bianconeri played against local side Valletta in a friendly match at Ta’ Qali national stadium, turned white and black for the occasion as most supporters wore the traditional striped shirts.

Juventus will continue their winter training camp today before flying to neighbouring Sicily tomorrow. The bianconeri, third in the league behind Inter and Roma, will be playing Catania on Saturday.

They will be hoping that their visit will bring them the same luck that helped another Italian club which came over for their winter training camp last year. Milan went on to win the European Champions League, Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup during 2007 after their visit here last January.

For Juventus, coming from their first ever participation in the Serie B, a place in the top four places to qualify for next season’s Champions League, is an ambition that, if reached, will be a great victory for the club.
