Change is on the way and Malta needs a new government, according to the former Danish prime minister and head of the Party of European Socialists, Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, yesterday.

Dr Rasmussen was speaking during a press conference held at the Malta Labour Party headquarters and said that change is on the way and that Malta needs strong leadership, direction and an inclusive society.

He said that he also had a meeting with Opposition Leader Alfred Sant and expressed his satisfaction that he was in good shape.

He went on to say that the PES will fully support the MLP as it is a committed, active and European party with a very clear vision for Malta.

Dr Rasmussen mentioned a number of changes that the PES wants to implement, such as removing corruption and creating a set of duties and obligations for all members of society.

He also spoke about the importance the MLP gave to family policies, especially childcare centres.

“Childcare centres are one of the most important programmes for the future of our children – we can never invest too much in them,” he said.

Dr Rasmussen said that education is just as important – a country cannot be competitive and create new jobs without education.

“Better jobs, along with a tax reform, are needed,” he said.

Dr Rasmussen said that Malta needs a new government, along with an improved health care system, guidance on investment and better public service – among other things.

MLP acting leader Charles Mangion said the MLP deeply appreciated the PES support.

“Their support is important to us and is also sending out a clear message to the Maltese electorate,” he said.

He explained that Malta will have to face new challenges but emphasised that the family will always be at the centre and “feel protected”.

Macroeconomic policies have to be implemented to ensure growth, added Dr Mangion.

PES vice-president Jan Marinus Wiersma, Labour spokesperson for European Affairs George Vella, deputy leader Charles Mangion, the MLP international secretary and the three Labour MEPs, Louis Grech, Joseph Muscat and John Attard Montalto were also present.
