A 25-year-old man had his suspended two-year jail sentence put into effect after it was proven in court that he failed to attend a drug rehabilitation programme as ordered by the court.

The court, presided over by magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how Tristan Falzon, from Qormi, was jailed for two years suspended for four and ordered by the court to start a drug rehabilitation programme after he was found guilty to stealing e2,330 (Lm1,000) from his father in August 2003.

Falzon had started a rehabilitation programme at Agenzija Sedqa in June 2005, however, he gradually stopped making contact with the agency. To this end, he was excluded from the programme.

Magistrate Scerri Herrera said the court always gave the opportunities to drug users to mend their ways and rehabilitate themselves, however, she held that the accused did not produce any genuine effort to turn his life.
