The upgrade of the play area at the National Council of Women premises in Blata l-Bajda has been sponsored by HSBC. The area is used to entertain children of women attending courses and seminars presented by the Centre.

Works to relocate the library and redecorate the play area were assisted by the HSBC workshop team and money provided to purchase new furniture and toys.

“Over the years, HSBC has supported various initiatives that help people of all ages to unlock their potential and to grow in self-confidence” said Sally Robson, HSBC chief operating officer. “Many of these have resulted in very tangible benefits for the persons involved. The play area at the National Council of Women is another example of how HSBC assists in a practical way,” he said.

On visiting the premises, Family and Social Solidarity Minister Dolores Cristina congratulated the National Council of Women for their initiatives described as a milestone for the welfare of families. “When such structures are in place, men and women are able to fulfill their potential and participate fully in the social, economic, and cultural life. This new idea of incorporating a play area with the facilities used by the grown-ups for their studies and career advancement is a step ahead towards encouraging more women to be active in the formal economy, while knowing that their children are in the hands of qualified personnel.”

Minister Cristina concluded that this government is committed towards further enhancing the child-care sector which has witnessed substantial advances along this legislature, in the main interests of children and families.

The president of the National Council of Women Doreen Micallef said: “The contribution of our organisation, whether through courses, events or policy statements, over the years has served to further a more woman-friendly society. HSBC’s sponsorship is a practical means to facilitate and improve the quality of our life while it promotes equality of opportunity for women and enables them to participate effectively at all levels and in all aspects of the community life.”
