Labour leader Alfred Sant again claimed Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi is “a liar”, defying a libel suit filed with urgency yesterday evening and challenging Dr Gonzi to file another writ.

Dr Gonzi filed the writ after the Labour leader called him a liar during a political activity on Wednesday evening, when he spoke about a report that had been revealed earlier during the day.

In Dr Sant’s words, even though Dr Gonzi has long been denying the PN government’s plans to put a charge on health services, the report clearly showed that the Nationalist Cabinet had discussed plans to introduce fees in the health system about three years ago.

Addressing a fervent crowd in Zejtun following stops made in Birzebbuga and Marsaxlokk yesterday evening, Dr Sant – who turned 60 – challenged Prime Minister Gonzi to explain clearly whether or not he knows about cases of corruption at the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa).

The Labour leader repeated the party’s cornerstone proposals aimed at improving Maltese families’ quality of life – cutting the surcharge on utility bills by half, removing VAT on education and removing income tax on overtime.

Before concluding, Dr Sant also mentioned the MLP’s development plans for Gozo, the St Paul’s Bay area, the Grand Harbour area and the south of Malta, which would be given a new lease on life.
