Wheelchair-bound Obstetrician barred from specialist register

Malta Independent Wednesday, 5 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A wheelchair bound obstetrician filed a judicial protest within the First Hall of Civil Courts claiming he was discriminated from being admitted to the Specialist Register in Family Medicine by the regulatory committee.

Naged Megally, an Egyptian-born doctor who is a Maltese citizen, has been practicing medicine locally since April 1993 and has since October 1998 been working in the field of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology.

He claimed he is the only specialist in doppler, 4D and ultrasound employed by the government.

In 1986 Dr Megally was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy which left him wheelchair bound since 1997.

He claimed he applied to be included in the Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology however, he said, the Specialist Accreditation Committee refused him entry due to his disability.

To this end, he asked the Prime Minister, Health Minister, the committee and the Attorney General to include him in the register or else he would sue them.

Dr Owen Bonnici signed the writ.
