In one of the lowest turnouts for a general election since 1971, 93 per cent of registered voters yesterday cast their votes for one of the four political parties contesting the 2008 general elections.

Compared to the official figures issued in the 2003 general election where a 96 per cent turnout was registered, this year’s figure is rather low.

Most of the districts registered a turnout of 94 per cent with the exception of the 1st, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th (see table).

In 2003, the lowest turnout registered was 95 per cent in the 9th all the way through to the 13th with the exception of the 11th district that registered 96 per cent. The highest turnout was registered on the 7th district with 97 per cent.

This year, the lowest turnout was registered in the 12th district (91 per cent), closely followed by the 10th and 14th district (92 per cent). Two districts – 1st and 9th district had a turnout of 93 per cent, while the remaining districts had a 94 per cent turnout.
