The Augustinian Missionaries Secretariat (Amigos) has been involved in the voluntary sector for the past 13 years.
The organisation’s main activity and contribution consists of the preparation of a group of Maltese youths for a two month missionary experience during the summer season in Brazil. The youths have the opportunity to work among the poor children and their families living in the critical conditions of favelas (slums). Local preparations are spread throughout the year and include the planning of activities, the preparation of crafts, music, and games, while learning the Portuguese language, being the main spoken language in the country. The group also works hard for fundraising activities which are essential to raise a sum of money that will be offered by the Maltese youth delegation to the missions’ needs.
The organisation’s next fundraising event is an Easter Monday Piano Duo Concert which will be held on the 24 March at St Aloysius’ College 6th form Hall, Birkirkara.
The host pianists are Ms Janet Falzon, aged 23, and Ms Charlene Farrugia, aged 22. Ms Falzon has herself been to Brazil in 2006 to do voluntary missionary work with poor families in Brazil. Ms Farrugia is furthering her musical studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London and will participate in the concert during her recess. The two young pianists will unite their musical talents on the evening for this altruistic cause. The programme consists of a number of classical pieces of various composers.
