Dr Sant always brought the party's and MLP supporters' interests forward, and he always offered an impeccable service during the years he served as prime minister and opposition leader, on behalf of all Maltese, party officials and MPs said during the meeting.

Labour deputy leader Charles Mangion was also confirmed, following a unanimous vote, as the party's acting leader until a new leader is appointed during an MLP general conference on 5 June.

Moreover, by means of a secret vote, the party decided in which electoral districts it would contest casual elections.

There are six seats that need to be filled since Dr Sant, the two deputy Labour leaders, as well as MPs Helena Dalli, George Vella and Evarist Bartolo were all elected in two districts.

The party agreed to contest casual elections in the second, third, fifth, sixth, eighth and 10th districts.

This would mean that the following candidates have the best chance to be elected to Parliament, according to the total number of votes they inherited from other candidates: Chris Agius (second district), Owen Bonnici (third district), Joseph Mario Sammut (fifth district), Silvio Schembri (sixth district), Joseph Debono Grech (eight district) and Joseph Cuschieri (10th district).

On Tuesday, the Labour national executive and parliamentary group also agreed to commission an internal report regarding the result of this year's general election.
