The Armed Forces of Malta have been called in to Ħamrun after a package was found in Qormi Road, prompting a security operation on Friday afternoon.

Police confirmed that a suspicious package had been reported at 12.30 and that they could not yet establish whether it posed any danger.

The AFM's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is on site and carrying out a bomb disposal procedure as a precaution.

The road has been closed to traffic while the operation is under way, with vehicles being diverted from the area.

Police and AFM personnel remain on site as they assess and deal with the package.
