The Naxxar fireworks explosion that left two people dead and flattened three houses on 12 March, has led many to report cases of illegally stored fireworks to the police.

One such report led to the inspection of a truck in Gozo on Saturday afternoon, where police discovered a considerable amount of material used in the production of fireworks. The truck was discovered in Triq Tas-Surg in Xaghra.

Duty magistrate Anthony Ellul opened an inquiry into the case and appointed several experts to assist.

Another report last Monday led to an inspection at a Marsascala residence, where a small amount of explosive material and other material used in the production of fireworks were found.

The police said that in the days following the Naxxar explosion, they had continued to receive telephone calls conveying information about suspect explosive materials in various places around Malta.

The Naxxar explosion killed a 33-year-old mother of two and a 57-year-old man, known as Pawlu ta’ Mniehru, who it is understood was working the fireworks in a garage at the time of the explosion.

Following the incident, two men from Naxxar were charged with the illegal storage of fireworks and other explosive material in the same street where the explosion took place.
