Joining The PfP a manifestation of arrogance – Charles Mangion

Malta Independent Monday, 31 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Acting Labour leader Charles Mangion said yesterday that the government’s decision to join the Partnership for Peace was a “manifestation of arrogance”.

Speaking at the end of a ceremony to mark the 29th Freedom Day anniversary in Vittoriosa yesterday morning, Dr Mangion said the PN had not included anything regarding the PfP in its electoral programme and the government’s decision was taken immediately after the general election without any form of consultation.

“The government applied to join the PfP without the country knowing its obligations and benefits in this sense, and without any from of discussion between the members of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

“This does not send a message of new leadership from a government that does not even enjoy the support of the absolute majority of the population.”

Dr Mangion said this is nothing but arrogant leadership of a government that wants to create unnecessary divisions in the country.

He said the PfP decision has instilled several doubts that do not provide for a means for the country to move forward.

“The country requires a leadership that keeps it united, particularly since the Maltese have many challenges that should be faced fearlessly.”

Speaking about the significance of today’s holiday, Dr Mangion said the day marks the country’s peaceful freedom from colonial relations, while having adopted the policy of peace and neutrality.

Freedom Day is a national occasion for the whole population, not the MLP alone, said Dr Mangion, adding that every national feast marks important national developments and should serve as a means to unite the people.
