As Emirates gears up for the arrival of the new and larger Boeing 777-300 on 2 May 2008, its outstation office here in Malta has embarked on promoting Cyprus as a holiday destination and to further develop trade between the two countries.
The Dubai-based international airline, in collaboration with Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and InterContinental Malta, hosted over 100 members of the travel trade and their partners to a sumptuous Cypriot brunch at the CDC suite of the InterContinental Malta, St Julian’s.
Paul Fleri Soler, Emirates’ manager for Malta and Cyprus, said: “The Maltese are gradually discovering Cyprus as a holiday destination. Cyprus offers great potential for the Maltese seeking a relaxing holiday. Cyprus is within easy reach and, once there, one simply cannot but fall in love with Cyprus.”
Ekavi Charalambidou from Cyprus Tourism Organisation highlighted some of the places of interest and Cyprus’s rich cultural heritage. “CTO is delighted to team up with Emirates to promote idyllic Cyprus. Whether a short weekend break or a summer holiday, Cyprus offers a very friendly atmosphere with beautiful countryside that can be easily discovered by car (driving is on the left as in Malta), and an unforgettable gastronomic experience.”
Ponomis Christos, chef at InterContinental Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus, who was assisted by Maltese chefs from InterContinental Malta, prepared an array of antipasti followed by a selection of typical Cypriot hot servings and tempting dessert delights. Guests were offered flowing red and white wines that were specially brought from Cyprus for the occasion to complement the meal.
The highlight of the evening was a spectacular show by the Cypriot folk group Akrites Geriou. Dressed in their traditional costumes, the dance troupe, led by their own Mayor, engaged the guests in the fun and entertainment throughout the evening.
“InterContinental Hotels and Resorts aims to deliver authentic and enriching experiences to our guests – experiences that are ‘in the know’ and memorable. This was an occasion to bring the real Cyprus to Malta where the combination of genuine good food, wine and entertainment was the perfect recipe for success,” said Marco Frik, InterContinental Malta’s general manager.
Emirates provides the only direct air link from Malta to Cyprus. The airline flies to Larnaca, Cyprus, five times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. As from 2 May, 2008, Maltese business and leisure travellers will fly to Larnaca, on the new Boeing 777-300. On board passengers will find the latest comforts, gourmet meals and superb amenities for which Emirates is well renowned.
