A number of Naxxar organisations yesterday made donations in aid of the Community Chest Fund on the occasion of the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady, which falls on 8 September.
President Eddie Fenech Adami received donations in aid of the Community Chest Fund for the 15th consecutive year. Members from both sides of the House of Representatives as well as Naxxar mayor Maria Deguara and representatives from Naxxar organisations were present.
Both President Eddie Fenech Adami and Dr Deguara made reference to the tragedy that hit Naxxar less than six months ago and which would “surely leave its shadows on the coming feast celebrations.”
On 12 March, two persons died while a number of houses collapsed in Triq Hal Dghejf after fireworks stored in a residence exploded.
They also spoke on the moral value of unity and its importance during celebrations in relation to the feast of Our Lady and the victory of the Knights of Malta on the Ottoman Empire which was sealed in September 1565.
Dr Fenech Adami spoke of the Community Chest Fund and the needs of those who receive financial assistance from time to time. He explained that many are those who call on the Community Chest Fund for assistance to be able to buy school uniforms for their children at this time of year.
“There are simple things which certain people cannot afford to buy even though many of us take for granted,” the President said.
Meanwhile, the Community Chest Fund assists others in need, including those suffering from illness.
He also explained that the true value of the Nativity of Our Lady should not be forgotten while pointing out that one is only Catholic if he loves and helps those around him.
“These values should help us come to terms with our sadness even though we cannot forget what has happened,” Dr Fenech Adami said.
He also urged Naxxar people to enjoy themselves during celebrations without creating trouble or acting as a source of hatred between each other.
The local council, the Nationalist Party Club, Malta Labour Party Club, MUSEUM Boys, MUSEUM Girls, External Feast Committee, Victory Band Club, Peace Band Club, Naxxar Lions, the Elderly Day Centre, Ballut Blocks and the Pastoral Organisation presented donations to the President.
