Malta Independent Sunday, 19 October 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Heritage Malta will be opening its two museums in Vittoriosa today at reduced prices as part of Birgufest. They will be open from 6 to 9pm.

The Malta Maritime Museum is housed in the former British Naval Bakery in Vittoriosa. The building, designed by British architect William Scamp, was constructed between 1842 and 1845 on the site of the old covered slipway of the Knights of St John. This museum charts Malta’s maritime history within a Mediterranean context and also illustrates the global nature of seafaring and its impact on society.

The Inquisitor’s Palace is home to the Museum of Ethnography. It focuses on the popular devotions and religious values latent in the Maltese ethnic identity and culture up to the present day.

Visitors to Vittoriosa will also have an opportunity of visiting two art exhibitions that presently are being held in the two museums.

Anima: The Soul Within is an exhibition of sculptures and paintings by Antonio Mifsud and can be viewed at the Inquisitor’s Palace. At the Malta Maritime Museum the exhibition girl: interviewed will be open to the public. This is an exhibition of photography and design by Kenneth Borg and Paul Mizzi. Admission to this exhibition is free of charge.
