A new state-of-the-art shopping complex has been inaugurated in Victoria providing the best brands, quality products and services available on the island.
The Duke Residential, Shopping, Leisure and Wellbeing Complex has just opened its doors to the general public, with a fantastic array of events for all the family. The €10 million project, built in place of the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, is the first of its kind in Gozo and offers excellent shopping, leisure and wellbeing services.
The Duke Complex offers excellent shopping opportunities for all patrons: the Duke Foodstore, operated by Lighthouse Supermarkets, is the largest foodstore on the island and offers top quality products at excellent value for money. After a day of shopping, patrons can also enjoy a relaxing drink and a snack at the Connection Café, which is transformed into a beautiful wine bar at night.
The Duke also offers the best retail brand names, including Accessorize, Monsoon, Sketchers, Bata, E-jewels and Tip-Top, to name but a few. In addition to this holistic shopping experience, The Duke also offers child-care services that are perfect for parents wanting to get their week or month’s worth of shopping done in peace and quiet, while their children enjoy a few hours at Doodle Bugs child care centre.
The Duke Complex is much more than just a retail shopping complex. The entire area is spread over 4,000 square metres and also has residential properties with apartments, offices and garages, offering a stylish residential or commercial option for investors.
The Duke Complex is within walking distances the heart of the capital city, Victoria. Only a few minutes away from the main Bus Terminus and surrounded by four parking areas, the complex is also easily accessible from all main roads.
The site of the new Complex has always been one of Gozo’s most conspicuous locations. Back in the mid-1880s, Spiro Axisa, a Maltese entrepreneur, transformed a building he had just bought into the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel. The hotel was eventually extended and the business was taken over by Pawlu Portelli.
The Duke of Edinburgh Hotel met the increased demand for hospitality in late colonial times and was honoured by having the Duke of Edinburgh as one of its distinguished guests.
The construction of the complex took the environment into consideration with the adoption of environmentally-friendly initiatives: a contribution towards the diversification of energy sources, the solar system and heat recovery unit are estimated to save a maximum of 18,250kWh of electricity per annum. This corresponds to a saving of 11.8 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
