Malta Independent Saturday, 14 March 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The euro jumped to a two-month high against the Japanese yen supported by solid gains on equity markets. On the other hand, the single currency pared earlier gains against the US dollar.

The pound sterling advanced against the greenback lifted by positive sentiment in European stock markets. The currency also advanced against the euro but was held near six week lows.

Meanwhile, the Swiss franc was slightly weaker against the euro, hovering close to a two-month low, after the Swiss National Bank said it would intervene on the foreign exchange markets to fight deflation.

Finally, the Australian dollar rose to the highest in a month against a basket of major currencies.
