Tenor Andrea Cesare Coronella (below right) and soprano Giuseppina Chrizzi (above) will take part as the leading protagonists in the Concert for Europe organised by the Sliema Philharmonic society on Saturday 18 April at the Auditorium Sir Temi Zammit, the University, Msida. This concert marks Malta’s entry in the European Union and the first live performance in Brussels of Malta’s national anthem by the Sliema Band.
They will sing arias from the operas La Bohème, Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini; Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi; duettos from The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar; La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi; and also a selection of popular Italian and Neapolitan songs.
Tenor Andrea Cesare Coronella won several national and international competitions among which his first place at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto in 2001 followed by his first performance as the Duca di Mantova in Verdi’s Rigoletto at the Teatro Regio of Parma.
Soprano Giuseppina Chirizzi initiated her music studies at the Conservatorio Arrigo Boito of Parma, homeland of Italian opera, under the guidance of Donatella Saccardi and Raffaele Cortesi. In the competition Prima che si alzi il sipario (Before the curtain is raised) at the Teatro Regio of Parma in the season 2004-2005 she performed leading roles in Verdi’s I Lombardi all Prima Crociata and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
