The University of Malta Senate has passed a motion which condemns Israel's conduct in the war in Gaza.
The Senate of the University of Malta, at its meeting of June 26, 2025, discussed the situation in Gaza.
It mentioned "the horrors that continue to afflict the captive Palestinian population, which include the systematic destruction of most towns and villages, the targeting of hospitals and schools, the repeated displacement of the population, the killing of tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and children, and the obstruction of vital survival aid reaching the remaining population, leading to widespread malnutrition, starvation and disease."
"These recurring breaches of international law, cumulatively amounting to ethnic cleansing and genocide, can under no circumstances be explained as self-defence in retaliation against the horrible attacks its citizens suffered at the hands of Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023."
"Israel's continued refusal to bring the war to an end, ignoring all international calls and condemnations, raises the suspicion that Israel does not want to stop before it has attained its aim of destroying all resistance to its illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, and to make that occupation permanent; moreover, the Senate of the University of Malta joins other educational institutions in the world in condemning Israel's conduct of the war, but most importantly in demanding a serious and urgent drive to negotiate a durable peace and restore hope and normality to both the long-suffering Palestinians and to the Middle East at large."
It said that recognising that statements and condemnations alone have had no impact on Israel's will to continue pursuing its aims, it urges in particular those countries on whose support Israel relies to pursue the war and defy international sanctions, "to exercise instead their decisive influence constructively towards the goal of ending the war and securing a lasting peace."
