British Airways has set a number of ambitious targets to minimise the impact of travelling on the environment. The airline aims to:
• have zero waste to landfill by 2010
• improve carbon efficiency by 25% by 2025, therefore reducing grammes of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre from 111 to 83 grams
• reduce the average noise per flight by 15% by 2015 and
• reduce its net carbon emissions by 50% by 2050.
British Airways is working to reach these goals through a number of operational changes including changing take-off and landing procedures, and fitting new technology on existing long-haul aircraft to reduce emissions.
British Airways has also announced the purchase of new aircraft – Airbus 380 and Boeing 787 – which both have significantly better environmental performances than the aircraft they will replace. The A380 has a 17% lower fuel burn per seat than the Boeing 747, and the Boeing 787 has a 30% lower fuel burn than the Boeing 767.
Flying with British Airways reassures travellers that they have chosen a responsible airline. BA understands that although customers love to fly they are also aware of the impact on the environment.
“Climate change has become a global concern, especially amongst those who love to travel and those who understand its effects on the environment. We understand this concern and for this reason we are continuously striving to make our business more environmentally sustainable, easing the minds of our travellers and ensuring a brighter future for the next generation,” explained James Stagno Navarra, BA Manager in Malta.
“By investing in proper waste management and water conservation facilities, in a new fleet, by supporting a number of research initiatives and by developing more efficient operating procedures amongst other things we have been able to sustain our promise to the global community and to our local Maltese community to help save our environment,” added Mr Stagno Navarra.
British Airways has developed a long term programme, One Destination, which enables the airline to change the way they operate in order to ensure that they are continuously working towards their goals to reduce their impact on the environment.
