It’s Spring! And Qormi Is celebrating!

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 May 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The very characteristic historical streets in the centre of Qormi will be celebrating spring on Sunday week with the first edition of The Malta Springfest, ideal for families with young children or those still feeling young at heart. The event will be held next Sunday 31 May between 10.30am and 7pm.

Falcons, pigeons, rabbits, fish, reptiles, birds, fancy poultry, horses, dogs, cats and other animals will be rubbing shoulders with a bouncing castle, children’s games and pony rides specifically set up in a children’s area, as will fruit and vegetable sellers and flower and plant exhibitions.

Cultural heritage attractions in Qormi will be open for the occasion including antique chapels, some of which are built in 600-year-old streets, World War II shelters and a typical Qormi bakery that still bakes the very traditional way.

Qormi’s two band clubs – the San Gorg Martri and the Anici bands – will be providing festive band marches as will food and beverage stands. The local scouts’ organisation, the Qormi Football Club and the local MUSEUM branch will also be participating.

And what’s more? To remain in the spring atmosphere, proceeds gathered at The Malta Springfest will go towards the national 34U campaign for trees to be then planted in Qormi in the area in which the event will be held, from St George’s Church to St Catherine’s Street, Anici Street, Main Street, St Peter Street and St Francis Square.

The Malta Springfest is being organised by the Kumitat Festi Esterni San Gorg Martri, organisers of the annual Qormi Wine Festival that attracts some 10,000 patrons to the same streets every September. Sunday’s event is being held in full collaboration with the Qormi local council, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Dialogue and Information and with the support of the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs.
