Euro NCAP has announced that the Hyundai i20 has gained the maximum five-star score in the first round of tests for B-segment vehicles using the organisation’s new rating system. Raising the benchmark for the B-segment, the i20 five-door model scored exceptionally well in all four categories assessed – adult occupancy, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist – resulting in the highest possible overall rating.
Notably the i20 attained 88 per cent in the adult occupant protection tests, including the new whiplash assessment. The car’s active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners and six airbags – front, side and curtain – played a key role in achieving success in the tests for frontal, side barrier and car-to-pole impacts.
Equipped with high levels of standard safety equipment, the i20 scored an impressive six out of a maximum seven points in the safety assist category, receiving top marks for its seatbelt reminder and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The computerised ESC system helps to minimise the risk of skidding by applying brakes to individual wheels to direct the car where the driver wishes to go. Euro NCAP insists 85 per cent of volume sales should be fitted with ESC as standard to be eligible for a five-star rating.
Commenting on the achievement, Allan Rushforth, Vice President of Hyundai Motor Europe, said, “This is a proud moment for Hyundai. The i20’s five-star rating is recognition of our commitment to providing customers with superior quality and top-class safety. It follows the success of the i30, which also achieved the maximum score*, demonstrating that Hyundai is developing cars which bring excellence to European consumers. This is also reflected in Hyundai’s communication campaign – ‘True Quality Matters’.
“The i20 is proving to be a very popular model, selling well across Europe, and its comprehensive safety package is definitely a factor in its success. The addition of a three-door variant, which goes on sale next month, will further enhance the appeal of the i20 range.”
The Hyundai i20 has an extensive list of active and passive safety equipment, including six airbags as standard, active head-restraints, front seatbelt pretensioners, anti-lock brakes, Electronic Stability Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution.
