Nestlé Malta recently hosted a seminar to communicate a number of studies supporting the benefits of whole grain. The seminar was held at the Intercontinental Hotel in St. Julian’s on the 21st of May and was attended by a number of professionals including leading local nutritionists.
In her presentation, Yvette Sciberras a Medical Delegate at Nestlé Malta and a qualified pharmacist, explained how studies find that whole grain intake is protective against cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. Potential mechanisms for this protection are diverse since wholegrain is rich in nutrients and phytochemicals. Additionally there appears to be a synergy among the wide range of protective compounds in wholegrain.
Ms Sciberras described the intrinsic properties of wholegrain and the health benefits that wholegrain provides if consumed on regular basis. She also outlined other benefits related to weight management whilst discussing the existing direct correlation between people who eat wholegrain in a balanced diet and the tendency for them not only to loose weight but also to manage their weight better, thus the ‘Take it Off – Keep it Off!’ concept promoted by Nestlé’s Fitness brand of cereals.
Eating a nutritious breakfast helps refuel the body and brain with energy and nutrients after a night’s sleep. Research shows that essential nutrients missed at breakfast are not compensated for during the other meals of the day, and hence people who consume breakfast tend to perform better during the day. Dietary recommendations suggest an intake of at least 3 whole grain servings a day. A 30g serving of Nestlé Fitness cereal for breakfast constitutes one serving of whole grain.
“Besides sustaining better health information, we are actively committed to promote a better understanding on the importance of healthy eating habits. When it comes to health matters, a more informed public means a healthier society and our communication of these important findings are in line with Nestlé’s commitment towards Creating Shared Value, a fundamental principle behind the way we conduct business at Nestlé. This initiative is related to Nestlé’s basic business strategy of nutrition, health, and wellness and makes for a fundamental connection between shareholder value and community value”, said Claire Carey, Marketing Manager at Nestlé Malta.
