UK Wheelie bin murder suspect arrested – victim is his ex-wife

Malta Independent Friday, 12 June 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The wheelie bin murder suspect Peter Wallner was arrested after dental records proved that the badly decomposed body found in the bin in Surrey, UK was that of his wife Melanie Wallner.

According to a Surrey police spokesperson Ms Fenech decided not to accompany Mr Wallner on his return to the UK and remained in Malta.

The Sun reported that former chef, Mr Wallner was arrested shortly and was detained in British police custody after he landed in Gatwick airport at around 8pm. German born Mr Wallner, 33 and his Maltese partner Lilia Fenech, 23 had fled to Malta around the same time the bin was left out for refuse collectors. Mrs Wallner’s body was found last Saturday afternoon after three days earlier, when a foot was seen jutting out of the bin and neighbours looked inside the bin left in the front garden of a semi-detached house, which was rented, by Wallner and his partner in Cobham, Surrey, UK.

The identity of the corpse was identified yesterday afternoon. A post-mortem examination found that Mrs Wallner had suffered a serious head injury but the cause of death was inconclusive. Forensic experts are searching homes where they had lived and officers have extended their house-to-house enquiries.

According to GetSurrey news, it seems that Mr and Mrs Wallner got married in 2001 in North London and Mrs Wallner would have been 32 last year. It is not clear how long ago she died and her family were informed of her death on Wednesday.

Police now want to speak to anyone who knew Mrs Wallner well, or anyone who has seen her any time over the past three years. People who knew her well thought she had moved away from Surrey in the last few years and others believed she might have died in August 2006. Police said that varying accounts were received about Mrs Wallner’s recent history.

This newspaper yesterday reported that Mr Wallner contacted the British authorities from his girlfriend’s home in San Gwann, Malta and was return voluntarily to the UK.

They had travelled to Malta in a rented Volkswagen crafter van with registration number RV58 YDX. Mr Wallner has apparently contacted the British police before the van was spotted parked in San Gwann. The owner of Parkhurst self drive, the Surrey car rental said he had rented the van just for one week.

The pair had been spotted on CCTV cameras on the M25 travelling to Dover in the can, had boarded a ferry across the English Channel and travelled to Malta overland.
