Nescafé has re-vamped and re-launched its global website, a new and important part of which is a detailed explanation Nescafé’s practices toward ensuring its coffee has been sustainably produced – a major issue in coffee production. At www.nescafe.com/sustainability, Nescafé describes the numerous sustainable practices adopted in the agriculture, manufacturing and packaging stages of its coffee production.
Such initiatives also include efforts to ensure that Nescafé’s production methods bring extra wealth and improve the quality of life of coffee farmers – by contributing to their communal development while at the same time achieving higher quality for its products.
For example, in the Gedeo Zone of Kochere Woreda – an Ethiopian coffee-growing region – a community of farmers in the village of Hama has been working together with Nescafé to improve their own lives and the lives of their children. With an investment in agronomists, engineers and resources, Nescafé has started ensuring the provision of clean water to 95 per cent of the population lacking access to the precious resource, while also making more economic use of water in the production of coffee.
Other areas tackled include ways to improve the environmental performance of Nescafé’s industrial operations and of packaging materials used so as to minimise the environmental impact while ensuring an acceptable quality level for consumers.
Nestlé’s first formal Source Reduction Programme on packaging began in 1991, and since then packaging materials have been reduced by more than 390,000 tonnes resulting in a decrease of carbon dioxide output of more than one million tonnes.
