In the women’s tennis singles competition, the young Kimberley Cassar, making her debut at the Mediterranean Games, was eliminated by Cagla Buyukakcay of Turkey who won the encounter easily 6-1, 6-0. The match lasted just 45 minutes – 22minutes for the first set and 23 for the second.

In the bowls Raffa doubles competition, the Maltese pair of David Farrugia and Reno Farrugia were also eliminated from the teams event as they suffered a 12-6 loss to San Marino, the Group winners, who had also defeated Italy and Serbia in earlier matches.

In the sailing competition, there were no races yesterday as the Laser Radial programme had to be postponed.

Competing in the wrestling 84kg category, Malta’s Abraham Vassallo was also eliminated after his opening bout. He lost 3-0 to Ahmed Elabsawi of Egypt.

The Trap shooting competition also came to an end yesterday with Malta’s Nazzareno Attard showing improvement, finishing in 23rd place after hitting 22 and 21 in the final two rounds, for a disappointing overall total of 104. A disastrous two rounds on the opening day contributed to Attard’s poor performance in Pescara which could not be compared to his silver medal performance in Cyprus a few weeks ago.

The competition was won by Bostjan Macek of Slovenia while Giovanni Pellielo of Italy took silver and Francesco Amici of San Marino won bronze.

In golf, after the first day, best placed player for Malta was Andrew Borg. He is occupying joint seventh place with competitors from Slovenia, Libya and San Marino who have a score of 75 (+3).

Christopher Bergedahl is occupying joint 10th place with a Tunisian competitor (+79), while the other Maltese player, John Jr. Micallef Verelst was in 13th place (+11)

Malta’s Under 21 footballers obtained the best result and registered the best performance on the day as they suffered a minimal 1-0 defeat against strong contenders France. The only goal was scored in the first half.

Malta was forced to defend for long stretches, but Edwin Camilleri’s boys were well organised at the back and made it very difficult for the French.

The women’s basketball team suffered a third consecutive defeat yesterday evening, this time going down heavily 82-48 to Serbia. The session scores were 16-15, 20-16, 28-7, 19-9.

By the interval, the Maltese were still in the match (36-31), but they fell to pieces in the third and fourth sessions.

The result condemned the Maltese women’s side to bottom place in Group B.

Greece won the Group on six points, followed by Serbia on five, Turkey on four and Malta three points.

Now Santino Coppa’s girls will play Albania for seventh or eighth place. The latter finished last in Group A.
