10 Trees for each of the 75 years of Three Hills brand ‘kunserva’

Malta Independent Sunday, 5 July 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Three Hills brand kunserva (tomato paste) is celebrating its 75th birthday and to commemorate its diamond jubilee, Magro Brothers (Foods) Ltd has decided to sponsor 10 trees for every year the brand has been serving the Maltese market.

The 750 trees will be planted at a prominent site in Marsalforn identified by the Gozo Ministry to be converted into a public garden. The maintenance and the day-to-day upkeep of the public garden will be entrusted to the Zebbug (Gozo) local council.

Most of the trees that are being planted are indigenous and the garden will be aptly named Gnejnet it-Tliet Gholjiet (The Three Hills Gardens).

The public-private initiative is another step taken to turn Gozo into an ecological island.

Magro Brothers managing director John Magro comments, “Magro Brothers is fully committed to the eco-Gozo project and we are very pleased to have been given the opportunity to contribute towards the vision.”

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono praised the initiative taken by Magro Brothers, observing how it is in conformity with the government’s vision of turning Gozo into an eco-island. The site chosen for Gnejnet it-Tliet Gholjiet is also significant since it is a prominent site popular with tourists, as well as many Gozitan and Maltese families.

Zebbug mayor Charles Saliba, also present for the inaugural event, expressed his satisfaction that Marsalforn would soon have another public place of relaxation and enjoyment for both locals and visitors.

Magro Brothers is a firm believer in its corporate social responsibility, especially to Gozo.

“Besides the direct support to the local farming community and assistance in social and cultural events organised in Gozo, we at Magro Brothers have several programmes running at present to support the environment – including energy-saving schemes, battery-operated transport vehicles, water recycling, paper conservation and waste separation practices to mention just a few schemes we already operate in-house,” Mr Magro added.

“This year we will also be launching two new recipes for the Maltese favourite Three Hills brand kunserva – one with less salt and another version with less sugar,” he said. “Our research and development team has been working on this project for two years and we hope that the Maltese public will respond positively to these new products. We have been very careful to keep the great taste intact in these new recipes as well.”

To commemorate the diamond jubilee, Magro Brothers has also started various promotional activities, which are already proving to be very successful. Magro Brothers is also inviting the public to visit its factory, especially during the upcoming busy tomato season when they will be able to view, first-hand, the process of turning Maltese tomatoes into kunserva.”
