An illustrated booklet, Tniggis u Sahha, written by Stanley Farrugia Randon, a member of the medical profession and a Council Member of the environmental organisation, Din l-Art Helwa, has been published to raise awareness on the negative effects pollution has on our health. With a forward written by Dr Joe Cassar, Parliamentary Secretary for Health, it is now on sale at all major bookshops for the price of e2 and being distributed free of charge to schools and health centres in order that health problems resulting from pollution be better known.
The booklet is divided into chapters which include a short history on the subject, a list of substances which are known to be harmful to health, the effect of pollution on asthma, infections resulting from pollutants, chronic obstructive airway disease effecting the lungs, cancer and also the effects on the fetus which is also at risk in situations where the expecting mother lives in a polluted area or smokes. Other chapters discuss the effects of sea pollution on humans as well as on fish.
The booklet is also available at the offices of Din l-Art Helwa, 133 Melita Street, Valletta, and all proceeds arising from its sale will be dedicated to the organisation’s restoration programmes.
