Following the success of GreenPak’s waste packaging scheme, Green Dot Malta Ltd has been awarded the appropriate Mepa permit to operate a non-profit WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) compliance scheme entitled WEEE Recycle.
The European Union’s Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive aims to prevent the waste of electrical and electronic equipment. The directive primarily aims to promote re-use and recycling to reduce amounts of waste-disposal, and seek to improve the environmental performance of producers and customers alike. The directive also puts the responsibility with regard to the financing of WEEE recovery and recycling on the business community.
This directive applies to 10 categories of electrical and electronic equipment, from household appliances to medical devices, such as IT and telecommunications equipment, leisure, sports and lighting equipment, electrical and electronic tools, and automatic dispensers among others.
Ing, Mario Schembri, chief executive Green Dot Malta, said: “There are currently no practical options for companies to fulfil the requirements of WEEE recycling. With many years of experience running a successful scheme for the recycling of products put on the market by many Maltese companies, Green Dot Malta has the right combination of technical expertise, international association and local knowledge to ensure compliance at the least possible cost. Similar to what we have done with packaging waste, we see no reason why we cannot reproduce this success with WEEE.”
Green Dot Malta Ltd, as the pioneer in the Maltese Islands were recycling and recovery of packaging waste is concerned, will be using the experience gained through the successful GreenPak scheme to establish WEEE Recycle. Furthermore, it will put to good use the good working relationships it has fostered with other PRO-Europe members on the continent to gain valuable practical and technical know-how in the operation of WEEE Recycle.
WEEE Recycle will follow the ethos of Green Dot Malta Ltd by offering a wealth of value-added benefits, which include the promotion of members’ Corporate Social Responsibility as well as compliance with the law.
