Malta Independent Thursday, 6 August 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

GO recently pledged its full support to the popular humanitarian organisation Malta Red Cross first Malta branch and has made a financial donation enabling its dedicated team of volunteers to keep up the sterling work. In evidence of the newly set up partnership between the two parties, both ambulances operated by the Malta Red Cross first Malta branch now sport the GO logo very prominently on both sides and on the back of the vehicles.

The Malta Red Cross – first Malta branch is a humanitarian organisation that forms part of the International Red Cross Federation and prides in being its operational arm in the Maltese islands. The branch’s vision is to promote humanitarian principles and values, provide first aid coverage and support local health authorities and the civil protection department in case of national disaster via the professionalism and altruism of its disaster response team.

The vast list of events attended and monitored by the disaster response team is on the increase and the massive amount of local events include the Isle of MTV, various marathons, athletic and cycling events, MTA activities such as Notte Bianca, Birgu by Night, Streets Alive, Istrina, village feasts, beer festivals, concerts, boat races P1, car races Grand Prix de Malte, sports competitions, private parties and more. Incidentally GO has, on many occasions, sponsored these vastly populated and immensely popular events.

“GO is delighted to have the opportunity to team up with the Malta Red Cross – first Malta branch. GO and the Malta Red Cross – first Malta branch share a common vision that involves a commitment to enhance the lives of the local community. Even though the actual role differs, there is no doubt that the agreement we have reached will serve to draw us even closer towards a mutual goal that is exclusively community-related,” said David Kay, chief executive officer for GO.

“The initiative underlines our strong bonding with the Maltese community. The sponsorship proves that GO is committed to the principles of effective corporate social responsibility. Over the past few years, GO has stepped up its drive towards implementing a wide-ranging CSR programme targeting an improved quality of life for the society in which it operates,” he went on.

Prof. Frederick Fenech, Malta Red Cross president thanked GO for its support and said that the success of the Malta Red Cross initiatives largely depended on the generosity of caring companies like GO. He appealed to companies for donations towards this very worthy cause and urged individuals to step forward and join up as volunteers. “The mission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies at large – to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity – can be considered as a shared responsibility and we all have a specific role in achieving this goal,” he said.

During the presentation held at GO’s head office in Marsa, David Kay presented a cheque to Prof. Fenech in the presence of Edward Gruppetta, chairman of the Malta Red Cross – first Malta branch. Paulette Fenech, an active volunteer member who occupies the role of sponsors coordinator with the Malta Red Cross – first Malta branch, Franco Aloisio, GO’s senior manager communications and Priscilla Pirotta from the GO communications team attended the presentation.
