HSBC Bank Malta has recently supported a high level Maltese commercial delegation, jointly organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Malta Enterprise. This delegation accompanied President of the Republic George Abela on a state visit to Qatar. The president was also accompanied by Dr Tonio Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The State of Qatar has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years supported by an expanding hydrocarbon sector and record oil and gas prices. This growth is expected to continue but ever increasing focus will be placed on diversification away from energy into other sectors.
Michel Cordina, Deputy Head of Commercial Banking for HSBC Malta, highlighted the fact that through its extensive worldwide network HSBC is well positioned to assist Maltese and Qatari businessmen to develop international growth strategies and exploit the resulting business opportunities. HSBC has over 8,000 commercial relationship managers operating globally, dedicated to helping businesses maximise their potential.
“HSBC’s global network means more than just experience and knowledge. It also means real local insight and understanding which is vital,” said Mr Cordina. HSBC is actively promoted as being the Leading International Bank.
In order to commemorate this budding collaboration, a reception was hosted by HSBC together with Malta Enterprise at a leading hotel in central Doha, Qatar. The event was very well attended by the Maltese commercial delegation, the Maltese community in Qatar and local Qatari businessmen. Guests were honoured by the presence of the president, who addressed the guests. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also attended the event. The event was also addressed by Abdul Hakeem Mostafawi, the CEO of HSBC Qatar, and attended by senior officials from HSBC Bank Middle East Limited, Qatar, who stressed on the importance of ties between the two countries and the role that HSBC plays in fostering international business.
This occasion was welcomed by all and was instrumental in fostering a budding relationship between Maltese and Qatari business people.
HSBC Malta will continue to support future commercial delegations and it will also be a sponsor of an official delegation organised by Malta Enterprise to India planned for November 2009.
