Malta Independent Wednesday, 16 September 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Voted as one of the best dive sites in Europe, it is probably the most dived site in Gozo. The blue hole is a circular formation of limestone rock creating a clear large rock pool leading to an enjoyable and memorable dive area. The pool is connected to the open sea by an impressive underwater arch. Within the 14m deep blue hole lies an underwater cave.

Outside the blue hole there are very enjoyable underwater droop offs reaching a depth of 65m plus. Among the very large boulders, making up the sea bed in moist areas one finds abundant marine life. Frequent encounters include:

• Octopi

• Starfish

• Bristle worms

• Cardinal fish, grouper, rays, jacks

• Sea urchins

• Colorful sponges

• Moray eel

For sure this is an enjoyable dive offering unique experiences to beginers and advance divers alike. On the left of blue hole lies a chimney starting at a depth of 25 meters that ends on the reef at a depth of around 4 metres. Average underwater visibility is 35 meters
